Best treatment for cat allergies?

Question
I have pretty extreme cat allergies. After about 5 minutes of being in a house with a cat, I will have difficulty breathing, my chest will get tight and I start weezing. Sometimes I get itchy, red eyes and a runny nose, but mostly it is the breathing stuff that is the worst. My boyfriend of 3 years' Mom moved to Hawaii 2 years ago, and I feel awful because we have yet to visit her. The real reason we haven't been yet is because of my allergies... she has two cats. We don't want to stay at a hotel because that would be too expensive and she has a perfectly good huge beautiful home where we could stay. She keeps encouraging me to come and says her house is clean and the cats don't go in certain bedrooms, and their house always has all the windows open, etc. But I am so scared because I know I will be miserable if my allergies do act up. Claritin only helps a little bit sometimes and Benedryl makes me pass out. What should I do? What is the best cure for cat allergies like mind? I want to go on this wonderful vacation and see my future mother in law but cat allergies are ruining my life...
Answer
Unfortunately theres no cure for cat allergies and even if the cats dont go into certain rooms it wont help your problem-the cat dander and saliva can take months to be eliminated from rooms-it will be on your future MIL's clothes etc etc. Leaving the windows open doesnt get rid of the allergen. Even if the cats were to stay outside for the entire visit you would still run into problems left by the residual dander. If you get respiratory symptoms then you really are taking too much of a risk by staying in this house. Sore eyes runny nose etc are things that are reasonable to deal with but resp. symptoms can quickly get out of hand. Maybe visit your dr. and see if theres anything he can recommend to get you through for the time of your holiday.; Sorry I havent been able to give you much hope! cheers caz
